Why Deep Space works

Deep Space utilizes a combination of proven strategies, including the Pomodoro Technique, setting intentions, structured breaks, group accountability, and distraction management. Combined, it's like rocket fuel for work.

Enhanced Focus and Concentration

Allocating specific, short time frames to tasks minimizes distractions and heightens concentration, with the ticking clock acting as a constant reminder to remain focused.

Prevention of Burnout

Incorporating regular breaks combats mental fatigue, ensuring sustained high performance without overwhelming the brain.

Combatting Procrastination

The method promotes task initiation by breaking work into manageable segments, making daunting tasks feel more approachable and reducing hesitation to start.

Accountability and Motivation

Completing each work cycle offers a sense of achievement, fostering motivation and creating a structured environment that encourages responsible time usage.

Improved Time Management

Awareness of time allocation is heightened, allowing for better planning and more accurate task duration estimations. This can translate to all sorts of benefits outside of DeepCycles.

Collective Accountability

Conducting sessions with peers increases accountability and keeps participants engaged, with the visible presence of others serving as a commitment device to show up and work hard.

Supportive community

Unlike other online co-working groups, interaction doesn't end when the session ends. Skills practiced during DeepCycles are discussed and expanded upon in the community so participants can continue to improve concentration outside of sessions.

Social Solution to Notification Anxiety

Group sessions mitigate the anxiety of disconnecting from notifications, providing a shared environment that eases the fear of missing out on important updates.

Feeling Good

After 3-4 hours of being untethered from rings, dings, and pings, you just feel good. You got a TON done, your mind is calm, and you’re in a relaxed place. And so you want to do it more often.

What to expect

The Deep Work Accelerator is based on various tried and tested productivity and psychological principles to maximize sustained attention and energy while minimizing distraction.

At the end of 30 days, you will:
Be able to concentrate for 2 hours straight
Know how to manage internal and external distractions as they arise
Understand how to keep improving your focus and scale your attention to 4 hours of deep work a day
Change concentration-destroying habits and behaviours outside of work

How it works

1

Join the Attentioneering community

Upon signing up, you’ll have access to a community of Attentioneers learning and improving as you are.
2

Weekly course material

Each week you’ll be given a small amount of material to study before we practice together. Each week’s material builds off the previous week. Don’t worry, I know you’ve got a short attention span so I’ve made the material with that in mind :)
3

Weekly practice sessions

This program is not about passively reading. It’s about doing. Each week we’ll do two deep work sessions together. I’ll guide the sessions so all you have to do is show up with something important of your own to work on.
4

Work on something meaningful

You heard that right. With this program, you bring your own things to work on. So while we’re meeting twice per week, it won’t add more work to your plate. You’ll get to work on exactly what you need to (and you'll get it done faster than you ever thought possible).
5

Engage the community

At the end of each session you'll have the opportunity to ask questions or share your experience. But improvement doesn't stop there. You'll be free to post anytime in the Attentioneering community.

Why are the cycles set to 30/10 instead of the standard Pomodoro 25/5?
The 30-minute cycle strikes a balance, offering substantial time for deep work without being too lengthy, minimizing the risk of prolonged distraction. The 10-minute break provides ample time for reflection on the past cycle, planning the next one, and taking a genuine rest.
I usually work for longer stretches. Won't a 30-minute cycle disrupt my flow?
While you might initially feel interrupted, remember two things: Breaks are crucial for maintaining high-quality focus. Prolonged work without breaks often leads to diminished concentration. Also, DeepCycles are designed as a series of intense focus sprints, with each 30-minute cycle followed by a restorative break. The keyword here is 'intense'. This structure maximizes productivity and focus over multiple cycles. So whereas you might feel you can work for 3 hours straight without a break, it’s more likely the last hour (at least) is diminished, whereas doing 6 DeepCycles (30 minutes each) should keep you working at maximum intensity.
What type of work is best suited for DeepCycles?
Opt for tasks that:

- Can be done independently, without needing to communicate with others or search the internet. In short, tasks that don't open the possibility for distraction.
- Can be segmented into 30-minute chunks. For example, a project like 'Create a deck' can be broken down into smaller tasks such as compiling an outline, drafting text, arranging slides, and adding graphics. Challenge yourself to fit tasks into these focused intervals to discover your true productivity potential.
What if I'm unsure how long a task will take?
Estimating task duration is a skill that improves with practice. DeepCycles help hone this skill, enabling you to make accurate judgments about what you can accomplish in set timeframes, which is a valuable asset in all work scenarios.
Can I just finish up some work during the break? I have more to do and I’m energized.
It’s very important to step away from your work completely after each cycle. This is what provides full restoration. Research shows that even relatively low levels of work (like scanning emails) doesn’t give the mind the break it needs to recover and be able to work with full intensity the next cycle.
Why shouldn't I check my messages during breaks? It seems harmless and might ease my mind.
It's a slippery slope. Checking messages often leads to responding or worrying about something, consuming mental energy that should be reserved for your work cycle. Most messages can wait a little while for your attention.
What are the recommendations for eating and drinking during sessions?
Prepare any drinks before the session starts to avoid interruptions. Consuming fluids during cycles and breaks is fine, but snacking during cycles is discouraged as it can lead to minor, yet cumulative, distractions not only for yourself but for others. If you need to eat, do so during the breaks to maintain focus and respect the group dynamic.
